Music is at the heart of daily life at Ada Lovelace and plays a key role in the social, moral, spiritual and cultural identity of the school. Every child takes part in weekly year group singing sessions as part of their curriculum which prepare them to sing as a community in assemblies and celebration services as well as to perform in our termly concerts. All students in KS3 participate in these concerts and are joined by a high number of our upper school students who are part of one of our musical ensembles.

There are 20 specialist music places offered per year to students identified as having a natural aptitude for music. Music Scholars take part in a demanding and rewarding musical programme and act as ambassadors for music around school.

For more details on specialist music places and how to apply, please see our Admissions page or contact the Head of Music Specialism for the Twyford Trust, Ms F McGonigal: [email protected]

We offer a wide range of instrumental lessons to our students, taught by experienced tutors in each instrument.

As a school, we prepare for face to face practical ABRSM exams. Any students doing another exam board must be entered by parents/carers.

ABRSM Instrumental and Vocal exams

Ada Lovelace is able to organise face to face ABRSM exams for instrumental and vocal exams. Our exams run alongside the three National ABRSM exam sessions – one session each in Autumn, Spring and Summer.

ABRSM exams are either booked publicly, at a local venue (usually Ealing Green Church Halls), or privately, using Ada Lovelace to host private exams.

Once we have been able to confirm an exam date and venue, we are able to put candidates in contact with an accompanist who is available on our exam day. Please note that accompanists for the exam are not arranged by the school and candidates must arrange their own private accompanist.

Due to the quick turnaround to meet ABRSM’s deadlines, all candidates who are not currently having music lessons at Ada Lovelace, must email the details for their ABRSM exam on the first day of the term they wish to take the exam.

All exam entries and queries should be emailed to [email protected]

Trinity and Rockschool exams

Ada Lovelace is unable to organise Trinity or Rock School exams.

These exams can be booked online through the Trinity or Rock School websites.

We offer a large and growing set of opportunities for pupils to make music together, from specialist ensembles (such as our three orchestras), to several choirs open for all, to a thriving culture of student-led bands, clubs such as percussion and music technology to engage inexperienced musicians in the joy of making music. To further enrich pupils, we frequently team-up with music departments across the Trust, helping pupils to connect with other musicians through workshops, trips, and performances.

Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme

There is a national government scheme to help with the cost of purchasing instruments. The Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme enables pupils of local authority and academy schools to purchase instruments through their school net of VAT, provided the instrument is used as part of their musical tuition. More information about the scheme can be found here.

Please email [email protected] for more information.
